Identifying and Resolving Nationality Issues

British nationality law is complex and has evolved over time. Legislation was introduced during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries concerning the recognition and grant of British Citizenship. British Citizen status was introduced by the British Nationality Act 1981, which came into force on 1st January 1983.

Whether or not you are a British Citizen is determined by various factors such as:

  • Where you were born
  • Your date of birth
  • The nationality of your parents.

You can either be a British Citizen 'by descent' or 'otherwise than by descent', and depending which you fall into may affect whether you can pass your citizenship to your children.

Even if you were born outside of the UK, you may still be a British Citizen or entitled to British Citizenship and therefore it may be necessary to examine your parent's and grandparent's history. We can help to identify whether you are a British Citizen and explain what steps you need to take to register as a British Citizen and apply to obtain a British passport.
