Many couples decide for various reasons that they would like their marriage or Civil Partnership to take place in the UK.
If you are in the UK, you may be unable to switch your status to a Fiancé/Fiancée/Proposed Civil Partner. You may also not be in a category that allows you to apply for a Certificate of Approval. In such cases, you may consider applying for a Fiancé/Fiancée/Proposed Civil Partnership visa at the British Embassy/ High Commission in your country of origin.
You will be granted a six-month visa as a Fiancé/Fiancée/Proposed Civil Partner if your application is successful. During this period, it is expected that your marriage or Civil Partnership will take place. There is no need to apply for a Certificate of Approval but you will need to present your visa at a Registry Office to be able to register your marriage.
Once your marriage or Civil Partnership has taken place, you will need to apply for a variation of leave as a spouse or Civil Partner.
